Profiting through equality

In March of this year, the Chancellor of the Exchequer committed to increasing the Public Sector spend with SMEs from the current 10% to 30% within the next five years.

Turning this verbal commitment into reality will take much process improvement and the Prime Minister has already retained Anne Glover, Chief Executive of Amadeus Capital Partners, to lead an independent inquiry into the barriers faced by small firms looking to supply goods or service to the Public Sector.

Equality North East is already doing it's bit.

Through the impending Single Equality Act the Public Sector will use their procurement processes to improve equality and diversity in their existing and prospective supplier bases. They will have a legal requirement to do so.

To help support this Equality North East is developing the North East Equality Standard. The Standard will be launched at a conference at the Centre for Life in Newcastle upon Tyne on 05 December 2008.

The Standard will help north-east based SMEs improve their equality and diversity competence when seeking to contract for work with the Public Sector.
